Initial Brief:
Astro Elevator, a band with a deep appreciation for the '60s psych rock visual aesthetic, approached me to create an album cover that would resonate on streaming platforms and translate seamlessly into a vinyl record jacket, complete with labels. Having developed a strong working relationship through previous projects, including their initial t-shirt design, we shared a mutual admiration for the iconic styles of Wes Wilson, Victor Moscoso, and Stanley Mouse.
Challenge:
The task was to encapsulate Astro Elevator's latest themes of space and psychedelia into a visually striking album cover that could adapt across digital and physical formats. The design needed to appeal to both new listeners and long-time fans, capturing the essence of the band's music while staying true to the psychedelic rock tradition.
Creative Process:
Leveraging our shared passion for '60s psych rock poster art, I embarked on the design process by proposing two distinct colour palettes: a vibrant green and pink combination, and an alternative red and blue scheme. After discussions with Corey, the band's contact and a familiar voice throughout our collaborations, Astro Elevator chose the original green and pink palette, aligning with their vision for this project.
Execution:
The final design was a mesmerizing blend of psychedelic imagery and space-themed elements, rendered in the chosen green and pink colour scheme. The design not only paid homage to the band's inspirations but also stood out as a contemporary take on the psychedelic genre. Careful consideration was given to how the artwork would be adapted for the vinyl record jacket and labels, ensuring consistency and impact across all formats.
Outcome:
The album cover was met with enthusiasm from both the band and their fans, serving as a visual beacon for Astro Elevator's music on streaming platforms and as a tangible piece of art for vinyl collectors. This project underscored the power of a collaborative relationship built on mutual respect for artistic influences and a clear understanding of the band's thematic vision.
